TREE SPECIES OF THE ATLANTIC FOREST:BIOMETRIC PARAMETERS, GERMINATION AND SEEDLINGS PRODUCTION.

KEY WORDS:

PAGES: 104
BIG AREA: Ciências Agrárias
AREA: Recursos Florestais e Engenharia Florestal
SUMMARY:

The Atlantic Forest is a biome rich in biodiversity and has species that have
favorable characteristics for planting in urban areas, such as adaptation to soil and climate
conditions. Taking into account all the ecosystem services that urban forestry can provide,
studies are needed on the choice of species and the production of suitable seedlings to compose
the vegetation in cities. As a large number of exotic tree species are still used in urban
afforestation, the aim of this work is to provide information on the production process of native
tree species with potential for afforestation. The work was structured in chapters, which are
organized according to the objectives: In chapter I, an integrative review was elaborated to
verify the gap in research related to the production of native seedlings of the Atlantic Forest, in
addition to identifying, selecting and evaluating the information available on this topic,
published in the last ten years. In chapter II, the biometric characteristics of fruits and seeds of
species from the Atlantic Forest with potential for urban afforestation were evaluated, and in
chapter III, the germination and development of seedlings in a greenhouse were evaluated. of
papers describing the seedling production process, but there are not enough studies regarding
the production of seedlings of species native to the Atlantic Forest, as well as the identification
of possible locations of sources of genetic/reproductive material, and for which locations they
would be adapted. As for the biometry of fruits and seeds, it is concluded that the size and
weight of fruits and seeds are similar between the studied species, however, there is a strong
environmental influence on them, such results can serve as a basis for work on genetic
improvement of the species. species. Regarding the initial development of the seedlings, it was
verified that the species that obtained a better performance were A. clara and T. guianensis,
using the substrate composed of 50% pruning residues and 50% forest soil.
