DIGESTIBILITY AND GAS PRODUCTION KINETICS OF TIFTON 85 HAY IN TWO MATURATION STAGES BY EQUIDES

The objective was to compare the apparent digestibility of Tifton 85 hay in two stages of maturation by horses and donkeys of the Nordestino ecotype, through the total feces collection method, and the kinetics of gas production through the in vitro method, using fecal inoculum from both species. Four horses and four Nordestino ecotype donkeys were used in a completely randomized experimental design in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme, with two equid species and hay from Tifton 85 in two stages of maturation (Hay 1 with a higher content of non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) and lower content of fibrous carbohydrates (FC) than Hay 2). The experiment was divided into two periods of 29 days each, totaling 58 days. The first three days were wash-out, 21 days of consumption of experimental diets and during the last five days the digestibility test was carried out using the total feces collection method. At the end of each period, the animals' feces were collected directly into the rectal ampoule to perform the in vitro technique. There was a difference between equid species only in the apparent digestibility coefficients of CP and IPND of Hay 2, with horses showing greater digestibility than donkeys. For both hays, a shorter latency period was observed for the degradation of carbohydrates by the donkeys. Both species presented a higher total volume of gases (Vt1) in Hay 1. The volume of gases produced by the degradation of the A+B1 fraction (Vf1) was greater in Hay 1 than in Hay 2, indicating greater NFC fermentation. Regarding the volume of gases produced by the degradation of fraction B2 (Vf2), a greater volume of gases produced in Hay 2 was observed, indicating greater fermentation of FC. Furthermore, horses showed a higher value for Vf1 and greater gas production up to 96 hours of incubation of Hay 1 than donkeys. In Hay 2, the production of gases by donkeys surpassed the results of horses. It was concluded that horses and donkeys use better quality hay more efficiently, and that the microorganisms present in the digestive tract of donkeys are probably more efficient at digesting lower quality fiber.
