SUMMARY:

Forage cactus is an alternative for ruminant feed in the semiarid region due to its lower water requirements and high biomass production. The main cultivated clones are the Mexican Elephant Ear (Opuntia) and the miúda and IPA-Sertânia (No-palea). However, low diversity makes the crop vulnerable to pests and diseases, limitations in different climatic conditions, and loss of genetic diversity. Genetic improvement programs have been developed to create new clones, but they have not been disseminated among producers. The use of participatory methodologies is an alternative to bring producers closer to genetic improvement programs, considering their preferences and facilitating the dissemination of new cultivars. Given the above, the objective of this study is to evaluate the traits of interest in high-performance clones through participatory evaluations. Ten forage cactus clones were evaluated (IPA-200016, IPA-200174, IPA-100661, IPA, 100662, IPA-200205, IPA-200149, IPA-100004, IPA-200206, IPA-200008, IPA-100664). Groups of producers and researchers gave scores from 1 to 4 (poor, reasonable, good and excellent) for the following characteristics: Stand uniformity, growth speed, growth habit, number of cladodes, cladode size, cladode color, phytosanitary aspects, presence and abundance of spines and glochidia and regrowth capacity. The responses given by the groups of researchers and producers did not differ significantly, which can be considered an advantage, since desirable and undesirable characteristics are viewed from the same perspective. The characteristics classified with the lowest scores were: phytosanitary aspects, presence and abundance of spines and glochidia, and cladode size.
