SUMMARY:

This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with different levels of Mimosa tenuiflora bark extract on growth performance, intestinal health, and physiological parameters of European quails. A total of 420 European quails (Coturnix coturnix), from 1 to 35 d of age, were randomly assigned to six dietary treatments, with seven replicates of ten birds each. The treatments consisted of: a positive control (PC), receiving a basal diet supplemented with an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP); a negative control (NC), receiving the basal diet without AGP or plant extract; and the NC diet supplemented with 1.43, 2.86, 4.29, or 5.71% M. tenuiflora bark extract. Growth performance was evaluated at 14 and 35 d of age. At 35 d, carcass traits, nutrient digestibility, intestinal histomorphometry, cecal microbial populations, oocyst excretion, and serum biochemical parameters were assessed. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and treatment means were compared using Tukey's test at a 5% significance level. Dietary supplementation with M. tenuiflora extract significantly affected final body weight, body weight gain, and feed intake, whereas feed conversion ratio and viability were not influenced. The extract also affected carcass weight, breast weight, and celomic fat deposition without altering carcass or breast yield. Moderate inclusion levels improved crude protein and neutral detergent fiber digestibility and enhanced intestinal morphology, as evidenced by increased villus height, absorptive area, and villus-to-crypt ratio, along with reduced crypt depth. In addition, the extract favorably modulated the cecal microbiota by reducing Escherichia coli counts and oocyst shedding, while improving serum biochemical indicators associated with energy and lipid metabolism, with no evidence of hepatic or renal impairment at moderate inclusion levels. Overall, the responses were dose-dependent, with moderate supplementation levels providing the greatest improvements in growth performance, intestinal integrity, and metabolic status. It can be concluded that Mimosa tenuiflora bark extract has potential as a natural alternative to antibiotic growth promoters in diets for European quails, with 1.43% being the most effective inclusion level under the conditions of this study.
