YEAST IN SHRIMP FARMING: Efficacy of Pichia pastoris and Saccharomyces boulardii on the performance and immunity of juvenile Macrobrachium rosenbergii

The use of probiotics in Aquaculture has been widely studied as a sustainable alternative to antibiotics, aiming to improve the productive performance and pathogen resistance of cultured organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with the yeasts Pichia pastoris and Saccharomyces boulardii on the zootechnical performance and resistance of juvenile *Macrobrachium rosenbergii* experimentally challenged with *Vibrio parahaemolyticus*. The experiment was conducted in 60-liter recirculating aquariums. Growth parameters (final weight, weight gain, total length, and cephalothorax length) were assessed, along with the survival of Animals subjected to the bacterial challenge. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA, and no significant differences were observed between treatments for performance variables. However, microbiological evaluation of the intestine revealed qualitative changes in the intestinal microbiota, indicating an influence of the yeasts on the gram-negative bacterial community. Although supplementation with P. pastoris and Saccharomyces boulardii did not lead to significant improvements in shrimp growth, the results suggest a potential modulatory effect on the intestinal microbiota, which may be associated with mechanisms of resistance against opportunistic pathogens.
