Interannual characterization of vegetative growth indicators of forage palm genotypes of the genera Opuntia and Nopalea

Forage palms (Opuntia and Nopalea) take an average of two years to be harvested. However, the adoption of appropriate agronomic practices and the use of improved genotypes can accelerate or delay the duration of the development phases of this crop, resulting in early or prolonged harvests. Given this, the objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological and productive characteristics of ten forage palm genotypes of the genera Opuntia and Nopalea, subjected to different cutting frequencies (annual or biennial). The experiment was implemented in a randomized block design, double factorial type 2 x 10, where the factors were two cutting frequencies (2023 (cutting one year after planting) and 2024 (cutting one year after regrowth and cutting the palm two years after planting)), while the other factor consisted of the cultivation of ten forage palm genotypes (Opuntia spp. and Nopalea sp.). The following morphological and productive characteristics were evaluated: plant height, plant width, cladode area, total number of cladodes, number of primary, secondary, and tertiary cladodes, dry matter, green matter, and active photosynthetic area. The results indicate superior performance, with better morphological characteristics and higher productivity in the biennial harvest frequency.
