Perfil de compostos bioativos do extrato de variedades de palma forrageira e sua influência na cinética de produção de gás e fermentação ruminal in vitro

The forage cactus is a cactus used as a food source rich in water and energy for domestic ruminants throughout the year, mainly in the semiarid regions of Brazil. In addition, cactus pear has a high synthesis of secondary metabolites due to water deficit, high temperatures, low humidity, among other factors present in the growing regions. Thus, in recent years, the number of researches using cactus pear and other plants from semi-arid regions has increased considerably, due to an important action of secondary metabolites in animal and human health and nutrition, as many of these compounds have nutraceutical appeal. In this sense, this review aims to investigate the presence of secondary metabolites of cactus pear, as well as their nutraceutical properties to improve the health of ruminants, focusing on how these compounds influence the ruminal microbiota and the production of products from these animals. We observed that the secondary metabolites present in cactus pear can modify the ruminal microbiota, depending on the amount and source of each metabolite. Furthermore, research has shown that such secondary metabolites have the potential to improve animal production by increasing nutrient intake, improving rumen fermentation, and decreasing enteric methane production and excretion. In this sense, the use of cactus pear in the nutrition of ruminants, due to its abundance in secondary metabolites of plants, must be highlighted, due to its various benefits in health and animal and human nutrition.
