SUMMARY:

The semi-arid regions of Brazil exhibit peculiar characteristics, mainly related to irregular rainfall distribution and high temperatures, which exert a direct influence on the agricultural sector, particularly by negatively affecting forage production. Thus, forage cactus has been gaining prominence as the main source of forage in our region. Furthermore, due to its long growth cycle, forage cactus requires 1.5 to 2 years to reach harvest. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological, productive, and bromatological characteristics of ten elite forage cactus genotypes, as well as to determine the cutting frequency at which these genotypes exhibit the best productive and nutritional performance. The experiment followed a randomized complete block design in a double factorial arrangement (2 × 10), in which the factors consisted of two cutting frequencies—2023 (harvest one year after planting) and 2024 (harvest one year after regrowth)—while the other factor comprised the cultivation of ten forage cactus genotypes (Opuntia spp. and Nopalea sp.). The following characteristics were evaluated: growth and development; production and productivity of fresh and dry matter; and chemical–bromatological composition, determined through the analysis of dry matter, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, total carbohydrates, and non-fibrous carbohydrates. The results demonstrated higher productivity at harvest one year after regrowth. Regarding chemical–bromatological composition, variations were observed between cutting frequencies: dry matter showed higher contents one year after planting, whereas mineral matter and organic matter presented higher contents at harvest one year after regrowth. The fibrous fractions, neutral detergent fiber and hemicellulose, showed nutritional stability among the genotypes, whereas for acid detergent fiber, cellulose, and lignin, the genotypes IPA200008 and IPA100662 stood out.
