SUMMARY:

Tree cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has emerged as a strategic forage alternative for the Brazilian semiarid region due to its drought tolerance and high nutritional value. This study evaluated the effects of increasing rates of cattle manure (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 Mg ha⁻¹) and two growing seasons (rainy and dry) on the morphological characteristics, biomass production, chemical composition, mineral content, and in vitro gas production kinetics of tree cotton. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design arranged in a 5 × 2 factorial scheme with four replicates. Organic fertilization promoted positive linear increases in plant height, number of leaves, and number of branches, with a 134.12% increase in tertiary branches at the highest manure rate (80 Mg ha⁻¹). Fresh and dry biomass yields also increased linearly, with gains of 392.20% and 277.39%, respectively, while the leaf-to-stem ratio remained unchanged. Chemical composition showed increased ash and cellulose contents, accompanied by a moderate reduction in crude protein due to a dilution effect. Nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and iron (Fe) concentrations increased with manure application, whereas phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) exhibited quadratic responses, reaching maximum values at approximately 53.61 Mg ha⁻¹. Gas production kinetics revealed substantial increases in the rapidly degradable fraction (+1064.28%) and slowly degradable fraction (+61.37%) without affecting total gas production. The rainy season outperformed the dry season for all evaluated variables; however, organic fertilization mitigated the adverse effects of the dry period. It was concluded that cattle manure application rates between 60 and 80 Mg ha⁻¹ during the rainy season represent the most effective strategy for maximizing forage yield, nutritional quality, and ruminal degradability of tree cotton under organic production systems in the Brazilian semiarid region.
